Choosing a Shampoo for an Oily Scalp in Humid Malaysia

Quick answer: Choose a shampoo you can use as often as your scalp needs, massage the lather over the scalp rather than the lengths, rinse with lukewarm water and keep heavy products off the roots. Dr. M Hokkaido Kelp Shampoo is one option, made with 0% mineral oil, 0% silicone and 0% parabens and a low-SLS (≤5%) formula.

Wash technique matters

Oil sits at the roots, so focus the lather there. Give the wash 2–3 minutes before rinsing and dry the roots properly instead of tying up damp hair.

Reading the label

Look at the directions, the ingredients list and any precautions. Dr. M lists its shampoo’s formula points on the Dr. M site; those describe that shampoo, not every other product.

When it is more than oil

If you are also seeing more scalp or a widening parting, oil control alone will not answer the question. Book a free consultation and AI scan at Folli-Doc, or read hair loss treatment in KL.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wash daily?

Wash as often as your scalp needs; for many oily scalps that is daily.

Hot or warm water?

Lukewarm is gentler than hot water.

Is an oily scalp a disease?

Usually not, but see a doctor if it is itchy, red or flaky.
